leafsnackWelcome to the tutorial for *Viticulture*!
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___i.imgur.com_P3asiy7.png[/img]
Your family's vineyard has been passed down to you, as it was passed down to your parents. Now, you must grow and manage your estate by cultivating your own wines and shipping them to clients.
The game ends once a player reaches 20 or more victory points.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
leafsnackEach player starts the game with a Mama and Papa card, which combined give each player their starting resources.
Each player always starts with 2 normal workers and 1 Grande worker, as well as some amount of lira (₤) and a few cards.
Additionally, each player has the choice between starting with the depicted structure, or taking its building cost in lira (₤). Some Papas have other bonuses as well.1mama_card620c54b77b34100

leafsnackWe have the choice to start with either the *Irrigation* building, or with its equivalent construction cost in lira (₤3).
You can see the construction cost of any structure on your board by looking at the coin icon next to it.3building_slot_irrigation620c54b77b34100building_slot_irrigation 1
leafsnackGo ahead and click *[blue]"Irrigation"[/blue]* to construct it on your board. This structure lets us plant grapes in our fields that have an Irrigation icon on them.4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment620c54b77b34110
leafsnackBefore the start of each round, players will pick their *wake-up positions* by placing their *rooster* meeple on one of the 7 spots on the wake-up chart. This determines the turn order this year.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___i.imgur.com_76VKwbn.png[/img]
Most of these spots have a bonus that you take immediately upon placing your *rooster* on it. The later turn order spots have more powerful bonuses, and the earlier turn order spots have weaker bonuses.1deck_back_card_deckBlue620c54bb096d500
leafsnack[red]Catherine[/red] chooses wake-up position #4 gaining ₤1 as a bonus.
If we choose spots 1, 2, or 3, we will be ahead of Catherine in turn order but could only take a green or purple card as a bonus.
If we choose spots 5, 6, or 7, we will be behind Catherine, but can take a yellow or blue card, a victory point, or an extra worker for-this-year-only.1maintitlebar_content620c54dbb339c00
leafsnackThe year has begun. We choose position #2, drawing a green card as a bonus. Since our rooster is ahead of [red]Catherine's[/red] on the wake-up chart, we will be the starting player.
When it's your turn in *Viticulture*, simply choose one of the available action spaces from the mainboard by placing one of your workers on it.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment620c54efa861800token_88690205_rooster 12
leafsnackThere are four seasons in each year, but [green]*Summer*[/green] & [blue]*Winter*[/blue] will make up the majority of the playtime.
*Spring:* Choose wake-up positions
*Summer:* [blue][Worker placement][/blue]
*Fall:* Draw 1 yellow/blue card
*Winter:* [blue][Worker placement][/blue]
The Summer side of the board has yellow action spaces, while the Winter side has blue action spaces.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment620c54efa861800
leafsnackPlayers may only play workers onto action spaces that are *in the current season*. Once you no longer want to take any more actions in the Summer, saving the rest of your workers for Winter, you can click [red]"Pass"[/red]. Once all players have passed out of Summer, players draw a visitor card in the Fall, and then [blue]Winter[/blue] begins.3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment620c54efa861800
leafsnackA big part of *Viticulture* is cultivating your fields of grapes.
Each player starts the game with three empty fields, of values 5, 6, & 7.
Look at the two [green]green cards[/green] in your hand. These are *vine cards*, and will have either white or red grapes depicted on them. Each field can only hold grapes whose #-values sum up to the capacity of that field (i.e. a 6-field can hold 6).4field_slot_88690205_1620c54efa861800field_slot_88690205_1 2 field_slot_88690205_2 2 field_slot_88690205_3 2 playerboard_hand_zone_88690205_item_49 3 playerboard_hand_zone_88690205_item_57 3
leafsnackTo plant a vine card in one of your fields, you must visit the [green]"Plant a green card" action[/green].
Click the action space to place a worker on it. Then, place the [blue]Malvasia card[/blue] into our [blue]*5-field*[/blue] by clicking on each of them. Finally, hit "Confirm".5label_boardLabels_152620c54efa861810label_boardLabels_152 1 action_slot_151 1 field_slot_88690205_1 2 playerboard_hand_zone_88690205_item_49 2
leafsnackNice! Our first grape has been planted in our vineyard.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___i.imgur.com_KhLUJm8.png[/img]
Notice how our other grape has a *Trellis* icon in the top right corner. Some grapes require you to have a structure built in order to plant them, either the Trellis, Irrigation, both, or none. We have Irrigation, but not the Trellis, so we can't plant our other vine card until we build one.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment620c554eb322e00playerboard_hand_zone_88690205_item_57 3
leafsnack[red]Catherine[/red] just took her turn, taking the [red]"Draw a vine card"[/red] action. She draws a [green]vine card[/green] to her hand.
It's our turn again. While you definitely want to keep your fields around for planting vines, you don't really need to have three right now. One option is to *sell a field*, gaining its #-value in ₤. We'll still have two fields left, which is all we need.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment620c55658ee7100label_boardLabels_112 1 action_slot_111 1
leafsnackTake the [red]"Buy/Sell One Field" action[/red] and *sell* your [blue]#6 field[/blue] to gain ₤6.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment620c55658ee7110label_boardLabels_142 1 action_slot_141 1 field_slot_88690205_2 2
leafsnackGreat job, now we have ₤9 to spend on whatever we please.
Speaking of which, one of the best things you can spend your money on is on *training more workers*.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___i.imgur.com_hPEruLK.png[/img]
In the Winter, if you take the [red]"Pay 4 to train one" action[/red], you can add another worker to your arsenal that you can use starting next year.
Each player starts with only 3 workers, but can train up to 3 more for a total of 6.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment620c558ca938e00label_boardLabels_322 5 action_slot_321 5
leafsnack[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___i.imgur.com_RU8n1g8.png[/img]
Training workers is extremely important! Being able to do 4 actions in a year instead of 3 is a massive boost to what you can accomplish, and you can train up to three additional workers during the game for a total of *6*.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment620c558ca938e00
leafsnack[red]Catherine[/red] has passed, leaving her remaining two workers for the Winter season.
We only have one worker left, and we definitely want to spend our money on training a worker whenever we can. We should [red]*pass*[/red] as well to save our worker for Winter. Then, hit "Confirm".1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment620c55a674cd610
leafsnackIt is now the *Fall* season.
Nothing much happens in this season. Each player, in player order, chooses whether they want to draw a yellow card to their hand, or a blue card.
Both yellow and blue cards are *"visitor cards"*, one-time use effects that can only be used by taking the [red]corresponding action.[/red]
Yellow cards are only played in Summer,
and blue cards are only played in Winter.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment620c55abd2e5200action_slot_101 1 action_slot_351 1
leafsnack*Take* the summer visitor card (yellow), since we don't have any in our hand yet.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment620c55abd2e5210
leafsnack[red]Catherine[/red] also draws a summer visitor card (yellow).
Now, it's [blue]Winter[/blue], the final season of the year. The turn order stays the same in every season, so we are up first. Go ahead and [red]*train a worker*[/red] using your final worker for the year.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment620c55d627a7b10label_boardLabels_322 1 action_slot_321 1
leafsnackNice. At the end of each year, we retrieve all of our workers from the board. For you, that will include your new worker as well.
[red]Catherine[/red] has two workers left and we have zero, so she's going to take both of her remaining actions right now.1token_88690205_worker_3620c55dec8e2500
leafsnackWhat? [red]Catherine[/red] used the same action we took?
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___i.imgur.com_jLSkKcv.png[/img]
Notice how one of your workers is larger and has a "G" on it? This is your *grande worker*. You can place them on an action that someone else has already claimed. Each player starts the game with one, meaning each player will be able to ignore the worker placement restriction once per year.
1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment620c55eeeafb600
leafsnackFor her final worker, [red]Catherine[/red] played a [blue]winter visitor card[/blue] from her hand.1action_slot_351620c561185ae100
leafsnackSince each player has played all of their workers, the year is now over. We always go through the same 5 steps:
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___i.imgur.com_mnaVieL.png[/img]
- Age wine & grapes
- Retrieve workers
- Collect residual payments
- Discard down to 7 cards
- Rotate 1st-player token (grapes)
We'll go over grapes and residuals next year, but right now we'll take all of our workers back and the 1st player token will rotate to us.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment620c56118715d00
leafsnackYear 2 has now started, and it's time to choose wake-up order again.
Taking the [red]#7 spot[/red] guarantees that you will be last in the turn order. However, it gives you an extra worker to use for this year only, meaning you can take one more action than your opponent can. That's usually worth it.
Go ahead and *take* the [red]*#7 spot.*[/red]3wakeupOrder_slot_7620c561187da210wakeupOrder_slot_7 1
leafsnackBecause we took #7, any place [red]Catherine[/red] chose would make her first in the turn order this round. She chose to draw a [green]vine card[/green].
Since she is before us in turn order, she'll take an action first. We can't take an action that a meeple is already occupying, so she will have more options than us in both seasons this year.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment620c562a9417800
leafsnack[red]Catherine[/red] plays a *summer visitor card*, which gives her 6 lira (₤).
Now it's our turn. We see that Catherine has ₤8, meaning she's probably aiming to spend it on something big. There's nothing bigger in the game than *structures*.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___i.imgur.com_Ufl90G5.png[/img]
We have ₤5 ourselves, so we could definitely build a structure of our own. Take the [red]Build one structure[/red] action and build the *Trellis*.1action_slot_131620c565a0c7ea10label_boardLabels_132 1 action_slot_131 1 building_slot_trellis 1
leafsnackNow that we've constructed the *Trellis*, we have the ability to plant our [green]vine card[/green], Syrah, into one of our fields in the future.
[red]Catherine[/red] goes next.1token_88690205_trellis620c568de2b3100playerboard_hand_zone_88690205_item_57 3
leafsnackJust like we thought, [red]Catherine[/red] wanted to build a structure and spend her money. She had to use her *grande worker* to do so however, since we were already occupying the "Build one structure" space.
Now that we have our *Trellis*, we can plant our other [green]vine card[/green]. Use the [red]"Plant a vine card" action[/red] to plant it into the same field as our other vine.1action_slot_151620c56ad3645510label_boardLabels_152 1 action_slot_151 1 field_slot_88690205_1 3
leafsnack[red]Catherine[/red] draws another [green]vine card[/green] to her hand.
Our turn. We want to try and [red]train a worker[/red] again in the Winter, but we only have ₤3. We're gonna need to get at least ₤1 more in order to afford it.
Take the [red]*Give a tour*[/red] action to gain ₤2.1action_slot_121620c570ce1a5310label_boardLabels_122 1 action_slot_121 1
leafsnack[red]Catherine[/red] passes to Winter.
There's not much left for us to do in the Summer, so we should as well. Go ahead and [red]*pass*[/red].1token_92066194_rooster620c57191a5b210
leafsnack[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___i.imgur.com_Z5vM6jJ.png[/img]
If all else fails, you can always place a worker on the [blue]"Gain ₤1" action[/blue], no matter how many workers are already on it.
If you can't place your workers anywhere else, or if you really need that ₤1, you may be forced to use it sometimes.1action_slot_801620c5728d284b00label_boardLabels_801 2 action_slot_801 2
leafsnackFall has come again. Let's draw the summer visitor card (yellow).1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment620c573038dbd10
leafsnack[red]Catherine[/red] takes the [red]Train a worker[/red] action. Thankfully, we still have our *grande worker*, so we can still take that action even though it is occupied.
[red]Catherine[/red] is out of workers, so let's go ahead and take our final two actions. First, let's [green]*harvest a field*[/green]. Click on the action space, then on our planted field. Then, hit "Confirm".1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment620c5748a12d610label_boardLabels_312 3 label_boardLabels_322 5 action_slot_311 3 token_92066194_worker_3 5 field_slot_88690205_1 3
leafsnackWhen you [green]harvest a field,[/green] you add *grapes* to your crush pad with #-value's equal to the value of the vine cards planted in that field. Each field may only be harvested once per year.
In the future, grapes can be made into [blue]wine[/blue], which is the main objective of the game. You age your wine and grapes at the end of each year by increasing each of their #-value's by 1.

leafsnackAt the end of the year, we age all of our wine and grapes by bumping them up by one. Now, we have a 3-red and a 2-white grape, instead of the 2-red and 1-white that we harvested last year.
It's the start of year 3! [red]Catherine[/red] chooses her position first again (since we alternate each year).1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment620c57652363f00grape_88690205_194 1 grape_88690205_195 1

leafsnackLet's *plant* another [green]vine card[/green].
This vine has a value of 3, meaning that we can't plant it into our 5-field. We already have 3/5 slots filled, so we could only plant a vine with a maximum value of 2.
*Plant* the [green]Chardonnay[/green] into your 7-field.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment620c579c5f78a10label_boardLabels_152 3 action_slot_151 3 field_slot_88690205_3 3
leafsnack[red]Catherine[/red] sells her 5-field for ₤5.
For our next milestone, we'll also need some money. To build our next structure, the *Medium Cellar*, we're going to need ₤4. But since we only have 1 in the bank, we have to find a way to get ₤3.
There's no action that gives you ₤3 other than selling a field, which Catherine already took. But, if you take a look at your hand, we have a summer visitor card that could help us.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment620c57eb08c7800
leafsnackThe *Medium Cellar* is one of the most important structures you can build in the game.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___i.imgur.com_hxgrh7P.png[/img]
It costs ₤4 and extends the #-range of wine that is held within it up to 6. A further upgrade to the *Large Cellar* costs ₤4 and extends the #-range of wine to the maximum of 9. [blue]These will be essential to filling any wine orders that require wines with #-values greater than 3.[/blue]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment620c581f5ad2000

leafsnackLet's learn how to make wine.
When you take the [red]"Make up to two wines" action[/red], you will choose two grapes from your crush pad and move the marker on them to the same #-value in your cellar.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___i.imgur.com_AHcZ1lY.png[/img]
For example, making wine out of a 5-white grape will create a 5-white wine, which can be used to fill purple order cards for victory points.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment620c58c1763e200label_boardLabels_342 1 action_slot_341 1

leafsnackYou can also make two other types of wine, *Blush* and *Sparkling*.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___i.imgur.com_mdA4Xh8.png[/img]

leafsnackIt's now the end of year 3.
First, we aged our wine and grapes by increasing their values by 1. This means we'll have a 4-red wine and 2-white wine, which is just what we need to complete our order card.
Next, we'll retrieve our workers, [red]Catherine[/red] will discard down to 7 cards, and then the next year will start.

[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___i.imgur.com_z7mD7uL.png[/img]
Order cards represent custom wine orders from customers far away. Each one requires a different combination of wines in order to complete.
